On the first anniversary of the successful application of Beijing’s Central Axis for World Heritage status, on the afternoon of July 27, 2025, the “World Cultural Heritage Beijing Central Axis – Imprint Beijing Central Axis Public Seal Carving Exhibition Forbidden City Station” opened in the Wenhua Hall of the Palace Museum.

The Beijing Central Axis is a 7.8-kilometer-long north-south stretch through the heart of Beijing, China, serving as the backbone of the city’s layout and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring iconic historical and modern landmarks like the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and the National Stadium. This historic axis, which originated in the 13th century and was refined over centuries, showcases the ideal order of the Chinese capital, encompassing imperial palaces, sacrificial buildings, and modern public structures, and is deeply rooted in Chinese capital planning traditions and cultural values.

Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital

Running north to south through the heart of historical Beijing, the Central Axis consists of former imperial palaces and gardens, sacrificial structures, and ceremonial and public buildings. Together they bear testimony to the evolution of the city and exhibits evidence of the imperial dynastic system and urban planning traditions of China. The location, layout, urban pattern, roads and design showcase the ideal capital city as prescribed in the Kaogongji, an ancient text known as the Book of Diverse Crafts. The area, between two parallel rivers, has been settled for about 3,000 years, but the Central Axis itself originated during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) that established its capital, Dadu, in the northern part. The property also features later historical structures built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and improved during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912).

The exhibition uses square-inch seals as the carrier and is divided into two major sections: “Popular Seal Carving·New Chapter of the Central Axis: The Central Axis in the People’s Writings” and “The Palace Museum Seal·Echo of the Forbidden City: Historical Codes in Court Seals”. With 200 popular seal carving works and 20 Qing Dynasty court seals as the core exhibits, it forms a cultural dialogue across time and space, and vividly interprets the historical context and spirit of the times carried by this magnificent axis that runs through the ancient capital for more than 700 years. Exhibition time: July 27 to September 12, 2025. Visitors can purchase tickets to the Palace Museum through the “Palace Museum” WeChat applet and make an appointment for a free visit .

As a disciple who has just started to become an immortal, the player will enter a world full of mystery and fantasy like “The Goddess of Luo River”, get involved in the four major forces, go through conspiracies and opportunities, and experience a journey from “only pure energy” to “aspiring to be the master of the plane”

 Background Settings.

In the beginning, there was nothing, nothing had no name, and when one arose, there was one but no form. In the beginning, when heaven and earth were first separated, there was chaos, and the clear and turbid air filled and circulated. All things contain the clear and turbid air, and the neutral air produced by the interaction of these two airs is called spiritual energy. The heaven, earth, people, and all things are born because of the nourishment of spiritual energy.

In ancient times, the spiritual veins on Xianyunzhou were abundant, nourishing all living things. The immortals were born in the pure air, free and easy. The demons were born in the turbid air, bloodthirsty and strong. The two races were born out of competition, just like the pure and turbid air, the immortals and demons have different paths, and are as hostile as fire and water. The demons have always been ambitious and want to use the bodies of immortals to practice magic, eat flesh and drink blood, and harm scattered immortals. In order to avoid being invaded by them and to preserve the eternal peace of Xianyunzhou, the immortals also fought against the demons.

Five hundred years ago, after the battle of Tianshang between the immortals and demons, the demon generals died and their vitality was greatly damaged. The immortals had fought hard, and although they were no longer as prosperous as they were in the past, they were still determined to take advantage of the situation to pursue and defeat the demons in one fell swoop. With the help of the monks of Xianyunzhou, they used the mountains and rivers as a framework and the meridians as a guide to build the Qiankun Magic Destroying Magic Array to cut off the passage from the demon world to Xianyunzhou. However, the demons were difficult to tame, and the space passage from the immortal world to Xianyunzhou was also destroyed by the demons in this counterattack. So far, the immortals and demons have basically disappeared in Xianyunzhou.

Although the immortals have disappeared from Xianyunzhou, the way of immortals is still circulating among the cultivators of Xianyunzhou. It is said that if one can understand the great way, one can transcend the shackles of heaven and earth and ascend to heaven freely. As time passed, the understanding of the way of immortals gradually split into two camps, the Tiandao League and the Xiaoyao Sect. In the past hundred years, everything has been renewed, and many famous immortal cultivation sects have emerged in Xianyunzhou. Among them, the four sects of Yijian, King Kong, Qingxu and Linglong are the most famous. The four major sects have produced many outstanding talents, and young people flying swords and riding the wind for thousands of miles have become famous in the fairyland.

The two kinds of qi, clear and turbid, coexist in the universe. Just like the qi of the human body, the two kinds of qi, clear and turbid, circulate back and forth, over and over again. Every few hundred years, there is a reincarnation. When the reincarnation changes, the wind surges and the clouds float, and the nine provinces are in turmoil. At that time, an unknown time rift appeared in Xianyunzhou. Now the wind suddenly rises, the immortal path begins, and demons are all around, and there are many crises. Our story will also unfold at this time

On July 19th 2023 , the multilingual website of the Forbidden City Palace Museum- Beijing, China, People’s Republic of Chinawas officially released at the Digital Cultural Tourism Development Forum of the 2023 China Internet Civilization Conference! The website covers five languages: English, French, Russian, Japanese, and Spanish, and will meet the needs of audiences with different languages.

A Thousand-Year Legacy of Caihua: Inheritance and Innovation in Official-Style Chinese Architectural Polychrome Painting…

彩画千年 A Thousand Years of Colored Paintings Architectural historian Lin Huiyin (1904-1955) once pointed out in his book “Pattern of Colored Paintings in Chinese Architecture”: “The colored paintings on ancient buildings are a representation of the oriental characteristics of Chinese architecture”. China’s official colored painting art has a wide and far-reaching influence throughout the world, especially in East Asia. It is not only a treasure in traditional Chinese art, but also an important carrier for displaying Chinese traditional culture and spreading Chinese art. It is also one of the “artistic and cultural symbols” that symbolizes the Chinese nation. China’s official colored painting art is inherited from the same source.

The Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang retains a large number of colored painting relics from the Sixteen Kingdoms period to the Yuan Dynasty, and the Forbidden City in Beijing is the epitome of official colored paintings in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. #A Thousand Years of Colored Paintings# The “Keeping the Orthodoxy” section in the exhibition will sort out the development and evolution of ancient Chinese architectural colored paintings for you

Among the many forms of ancient Chinese Caihua (architectural polychrome painting), the official style is the most representative. Distinguished by its clear symbolic motifs, strict hierarchical structure, and meticulous brushwork, it stands as the exemplar of ancient Chinese architectural painting. The Palace Museum houses an unparalleled collection of official-style Caihua works from the Ming and Qing dynasties, bearing witness to the thousand-year legacy of Chinese Caihua art.

On May 27, 2025, the exhibition “A Thousand-Year Legacy of Caihua: Inheritance and Innovation in Official-Style Chinese Architectural Polychrome Painting” opened to the public at the Exhibition Hall of the Palace of Eternal Longevity (Yongshou gong) in the Palace Museum.

The exhibition presents a compelling overview of the development of ancient Chinese Caihua and serves as a showcase for the outcomes of an art training program, titled “Talent Training on the Official-Style Chinese Architectural Polychrome Painting Design.” The training program was funded by China National Arts Fund in 2024.

Although the number of exhibits is limited, each piece is a carefully selected masterpiece, with many on public display for the first time. The exhibition is divided into two main sections: “Tradition” in the front hall of the Palace of Eternal Longevity, and “Innovation” in the rear hall. The “Tradition” section comprises seven units, featuring 43 copies and design samples of representative official-style Chinese Caihua items from the Sui through the Qing dynasties. The “Innovation” section, with four units, highlights Caihua artworks from students supported by China National Arts Fund.
