山塘街 Shantang Street is located in the northwest of the ancient city of Suzhou , Jiangsu Province, east to Changmen , the “first -class and second-class rich and romantic place” in the red dust, and west to Tiger Hill, “the first scenic spot in Wuzhong”. It is called “Qili Shantang to Tiger Hill”.
In the Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi was appointed as the governor of Suzhou. He dredged the northwest river outside the city of Suzhou and excavated it into the Shantang River. The ancient street built beside the river was called Shantang Street, and there were ancient buildings along the street. Most of the ancient buildings are buildings in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.
In 2010, Shantang Street was awarded the title of “Model Unit of Chinese Cultural Heritage Protection” and was named “Famous Street of Chinese History and Culture
